It supports two functions. B is usually used first to clear any old accumulated errors laying about in the registers.
Then the A function starts a dynamic one line display. 15607 ESF Errors 0 TEST Errors PRESS ENTER TO EXITThis display updates about once every two or three seconds with the current number of received errors. One of two conditions must exist, either a loopback must be facing the CSU generating the test patterns or another device must be sending the same test signal from out in the network toward this CSU. This could be a test set in a telephone company facility, a field service person with a Bit Error Rate Tester (BERT) or another Verilink CSU at the far end of a T1 circuit. Once the user hits ENTER the screen display stops, but the counter will continue to count any errors so long as a test runs.
The ESF errors counter is historical and can only be reset by power cycling the card.
